In 2016, Yiorgos Kaloudis achieved a remarkable milestone with the release of his album "J.S. BACH: Cello Suites on the Cretan lyra" after 12 years of extensive research and experimentation. The album, launched by the independent label DNA Records, introduced the world to the distinctive sound of the Classical Cretan Lyra. This traditional ancient instrument hails from the island of Crete, situated to the south of mainland Greece.
This groundbreaking achievement marked the first time that classical music had been interpreted using a traditional Greek instrument, representing a significant musical milestone. Motivated by his Cretan heritage and his skills as a cellist, Yiorgos Kaloudis presents a truly unique and innovative sound with the Classical Cretan Lyra.
To accomplish this, he modified the traditional Cretan Lyra by adding a fourth string, specifically the low C of the cello, and adjusted the interpretation technique on both hands. This adaptation enabled him to perform Classical European music on the instrument. The creation of this "new" evolution and the subsequent introduction of a whole new repertoire opened up vast possibilities and new horizons for the Cretan Lyra.
Through his visionary approach and dedication, Yiorgos Kaloudis has not only expanded the sonic capabilities of the Classical Cretan Lyra but also ushered in a new era for the instrument, bridging classical traditions with Greek musical heritage.
